If you love munching of sunflower seeds or freshly baked pumpkin seeds, then you need to try hemp seeds. If you’re anything like my friend you’re probably cringing a little bit and making that “eww” face, but in reality, hemp seeds are fantastically delicious. I, along with a great handful of friends and family, have been snacking on hemp seeds for years now, because of the superior, nutty flavor, and the laundry list of health benefits. With 10 grams of protein per serving, you can enjoy these chewy treats whenever you want throughout the day and not feel guilty about it. Hemp seeds also provide you with great amounts of the essential fatty acids and vitamins that you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Since you can’t legally grow hemp in the US, you can find the seeds, (and other industrial hemp products) at your local health food store or top-of-the-line grocery store. If not, you can always hunt some down online. There are some great industrial hemp and hemp news websites only a click away.
Drum roll please.
Ok, so let’s get into all the delicious ideas people have come up with for hemp seeds. I personally love them on salads. A salad is already healthy enough, but for the added boost of protein and texture, I sprinkle some on top of my favorite greens and toss in some chopped tomato and carrots. I feel like the carrots and the chewy nuttiness of the hemp seeds really complement each other. My best friend likes to throw some baked hemp seeds on his ice cream. At first I really doubted this idea, but after trying it I was blown away. The warm seeds melting into the creamy vanilla ice cream, and again, creating a nutty flavor that’s simply out of this world.
If you have a cup of basil leaves, half a cup of parmesan cheese, a ¼ cup of extra virgin olive oil, and a half a cup of hulled hemp seed, you can make yourself the best pesto you’ve ever had. I’m a huge pasta lover, and when I say “huge” I really mean “Titanic”. So when I tried hemp seed pesto over fettuccine I was bowled over. Definitely my new favorite dinner idea! Or just serve the hemp seed pesto with some crackers.
Ideal for someone who loves to eat healthy, and great for vegans, hemp seeds are the best choice all-around. (I highly recommend picking some up the next time you go out!) I tried apple hemp muffins for the first time about 2 months ago, and again, there was just a different flavor to it that I really didn’t expect. Even after all this time I’ve spent enjoying hemp seeds, I was still throw back by the fact that they could still surprise me with their flavor. Sweet, salty; it doesn’t matter how you use them, they are universally delicious. So don’t be afraid to pick up a bag and start experimenting in your kitchen. I’ll have some more hemp seed ideas for you soon, but for now, be creative and have fun!
